Breathe deeply and savor sunny days, vast blue skies. The great outdoors of Texas are easier to enjoy in Borger, thanks to 29 city parks made possible by a communal spirit that’s also a breath of fresh air. Much of the land for our abundant and abundantly inviting parks was donated by Borger residents.
Recreation for all, all around town. Our park system isn’t the only way we work together to play together here in Borger. For example:
- At the $4 million Johnson Park Youth Center, admission fees remain rock-bottom for the multitude of family-friendly activities, including indoor rock climbing and outdoor pool. Just outside of the Youth Center, you will see the entrance to the dedicated Borger Nature Trail, which inlcudes 1 mile of hiking trails over trickling streams and through beautifully wooded areas.
- At the 60,000 sq.-ft. Borger Community Activity Center at Frank Phillips College, both community members and students stay fit and have fun together with a full house of the latest fitness equipment and a brimming menu of activities including indoor swimming, exercise classes, and sauna as well as recreational leagues for basketball, softball, and volleyball, both indoor and outdoor. And for those who prefer a challenging path to fitness, CrossFit is also available.
- At the Borger Country Club, quality is par for the course, not only with great golfing, tennis, and swimming but also with superb dining and banquet facilities.
- With so many ways to have fun, it’s clear good luck isn’t needed to enjoy great recreation in Borger. However, for made-in-the-shade fun for all ages, the shoes always fit at the Ringers Club, a spacious 12-pit horseshoe park surrounded by shade trees and host to two competitions each year sanctioned by the Texas Horseshoe Pitchers Association.

Lake Meredith National Recreational Area. Scuba diving in the heart of the Texas Panhandle? That’s just one of the refreshing choices at this Texas-sized aquatic gem and sportsman’s paradise—1.4 million acres of beautiful blue water, over 100 miles of scenic shoreline and acreage, and excellent facilities including marina. Go for a deep dive or enjoy boating, fishing, and sailing. Hunters find the rewards are endlessly exciting thanks to a plentiful stock of game including deer, dove, turkey, duck, quail, and even pheasant.
Palo Duro Canyon State Park. The dramatic vistas of Palo Duro Canyon State Park are deeply inspiring in every sense of the word. The second-largest park system in the U.S., Palo Duro is sometimes called the “Grand Canyon of Texas,” but in fact this magnificent park is simply incomparable, not only in its scenery, but also in the immensely accessible recreation that includes more than 30 miles of trails with more 1,500 acres set aside for equestrian activities.
Alibates Flint Quarry National Monument. Designated a national monument in 1966 (and still the only national monument in Texas), these awe-inspiring rock formations have a history that goes back much further—over 13,000 years, when mammoth hunters were drawn to this site for the brilliantly colored flint needed to make their tools. Today, the commanding landscape is rich with history and ripe for exploration. Hike into the quarries, examine the mysterious stories told in the petroglyph rock carvings believed to be made by the Antelope People, or tour the fascinating exhibits of the Monument’s museum and visitor’s center.
