205 N. Cedar Street, which sits adjacent to Splish Splash car wash and across the street from Borger High School, will soon have a new look and a new tenant. Once a Taylor Food Mart, the store has sat vacant for at least the last 4 years. That will soon change, as Borger welcomes an AT&T authorized retailer who will make the once nearly-blighted building its new home.
Kiger Ventures, LLC, an authorized retailer for AT&T, will operate the new store. The building renovation and lease with Kiger Ventures has been driven by the building’s new owner, OneWit, LLC. OneWit purchased the property in a sealed bid auction earlier this year. Chad O’Neal of OneWit described landing the AT&T authorized retailer as “great for Borger and perfect for the location”. The store will provide Borger with product and services you would find at similar AT&T authorized retailer locations, says O’Neal.
The project is receiving assistance from Borger, Inc. (the Borger Economic Development Corporation) through its Commercial Building Improvement Program (CBIP). The new program was approved by the Borger, Inc. Board of Directors in January 2019. Katie Lingor, Executive Director of Borger, Inc., says the CBIP is designed to encourage owners of vacant buildings to fix up their properties and get them occupied by businesses. “There are many vacant commercial properties in Borger, and some are in poor condition. We need to renovate and restore those assets we have if we’re going to try to attract new businesses. This project with OneWit and Kiger Ventures is proof that it works.” says Lingor.
Kiger Ventures is currently planning to open four AT&T authorized retail locations throughout the Texas Panhandle region over the next year. “We’re thrilled to be opening a new AT&T authorized retail store in Borger. We look forward to serving the community by providing friendly service and an opportunity to purchase the latest technology locally.” said Mike Kiger of Kiger Ventures.
With construction underway at the location, the store is expected to open in the fall of 2019.
Borger, Inc.’s Commercial Building Improvement Program provides partial reimbursement to property owners who renovate a currently vacant commercial property, and successfully lease the improved property to a qualified business. For more information, call Borger, Inc.’s offices at (806) 521-0027.
