Taxes: Borger has long extolled its virtues as a low-cost place to do business. You'll find property here is more affordable, which often translates to lower taxes. There is no State income tax, and Borger is one of just two cities in the Panhandle region that offers tax exemptions on all inventory in transit. Borger's Freeport designation allows exemption from inventory property taxes of good exported from Texas. The exemption applies to items in your inventory on January 1 that:
- Are or will be forwarded out of Texas within 175 days of the date you acquire them or bring them into Texas;
- Are in Texas for assembling, storing, manufacturing, repair, maintenance, processing or fabricating purposes; and
- Remain under your continuous ownership from the time you bring them into the state or acquire them in the state until they are forwarded out of the state.
Services: The lack of taxes does not mean lack of services. In addition to a well trained administrative support staff and utility department, the City of Borger boasts a well-staffed Police Department and full-time Fire Department that has received an ISO Class 2 rating city-wide, with a total response area of over 450 square miles. Borger ISD's current tax rate was approved in a landslide vote in favor of new and updated educational facilities in the 2017 Bond election - which will yield classroom renovations, a new 9th grade wing at Borger High School, multipurpose gym/auditorium at Borger Middle School, the total replacement of Bulldog Stadium (football, track and soccer), a new Ag Barn, as well as many other improvements. Your taxes might be lower, but the services you receive in Borger will exceed your expectations.
